The Embassy

The decision to establish a resident Embassy of the Republic of Maldives in Ankara, Türkiye was made by His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on 10 December 2023 and the directive to formally establish the Embassy was issued by the President’s Office on 13 February 2024. Under this directive the Embassy of the Republic of Maldives in the Republic of Türkiye was established on 7 May 2024 in the capital city of Ankara.

The primary goal of the Embassy is to enhance the bilateral relations and promote the political, economic and cultural ties between the Republic of Maldives and the Republic of Türkiye.

Under the foreign policy objective of the Government of Maldives to promote and protect the national interest of the Maldives, the Embassy fosters Turkish investments in the Maldives while promoting the export of Maldivian goods to Türkiye. Furthermore, overseeing the growing number of Maldivian students pursuing higher education in Türkiye and with the notable surge in Maldivian tourists visiting Türkiye the Embassy also plays a crucial role in offering consular services. 

The Embassy is currently headed by Ambassador of the Republic of Maldives to the Republic of Türkiye, His Excellency Lt. Gen (Rtd) Abdul Raheem Abdul Latheef, who presented his Letters of Credence to His Excellency Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of the Republic of Türkiye on 29 August 2024.

The Republic of Maldives established diplomatic relations with the Republic of Türkiye on 28 May 1979.
